Neuroscience Scholar Track

Research in the Department of Neurology and Neurological Sciences covers a wide range of multidisciplinary programs ranging from basic neuroscience, translational research and clinical studies. Stanford is well known for its outstanding neuroscience community which includes over 150 world-renowned faculty members across multiple Schools and Departments.  The Department has a rich tradition of integrating cutting edge advances in basic science with novel clinical approaches.

Beginning with the 2009-2010 academic year we will be offering a dedicated mentored research experience for Neurology residents interested in pursuing an academic career.  Research projects may be undertaken in any suitable area of clinical or basic laboratory neuroscience anywhere within the larger Stanford community.  Applications for research track will be evaluated by the Department’s Education Committee on feasibility and merit.  With the guidance of their selected mentor, residents will develop a well-thought out written proposal including Aims, Background, Research Plan, and References.

As outlined below, there are two options in the Neuroscience Scholar Track. However, the structure of the research experience will be unique, and should maximize the research experience and utilization of resources. For instance, the two tracks outlined may be combined, depending on the nature of the research and mentorship, and the availablity of funding.

Track 1: A 6-month research track generally undertaken in the second or third year of neurology residency.

During this period, residents will have their weekly continuity clinic and minimal call duties. Research funding will be made available by the Department as needed.  It is expected that the successful candidate will finish the block with demonstrable output such as a peer-reviewed article, presentation at a national meeting, or draft of a grant application.

Track 2: A dedicated one-year post-graduate Research Fellowship to be started after successful completion of the Neurology Residency.

Research Fellows will be hired by the Department at the Instructor level.  Approximately one half-day/week will be spent in clinical activity to maintain skills and maintain ties to the Department during the research year.  The expectation is that the successful candidate would gain the necessary experience to apply for a mentored research award (such as a K08 or K23) by or before the completion of the year.
